Is Jabbawockeez the best Las Vegas show for families?

Recently my family and I had the pleasure of attending the Jabbawockeez show, “Timeless,” at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. We had heard from friends that it was a great show for families to attend in Vegas, so we asked ourselves, is Jabbawockeez the best family show in Las Vegas?

If your family loves music, dancing, and choreography, you can’t find a better Las Vegas show than Jabbawockeez “Timeless.” It’s energetic, well-rehearsed, and they take you on a musical journey that’s sure to get everyone moving in their seats.

Jabbawockeez history

Jabbawockeez is a dance group that originated in San Diego, California back in 2003. They began their rise to prominence after winning the first season of America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008. The win brought notoriety for the Jabbawockeez, plus a $100,000 paycheck. This set off a string of events leading to performances on many TV shows and a tour of Australia.

Jabbawockeez in Las Vegas

After auditioning for MGM executives in 2010, Jabbawockeez began performing at a variety of the company’s properties, both domestically and abroad. In November 2015 they began performing their show “JREAMZ” at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. “JREAMZ” was later replaced by their current show “TIMELESS” in February 2020.

Jabbawockeez Performance Review

The modern dance moves and choreography are the main reason you’re probably attending this show, but they try to round things out by incorporating comedy and crowd interaction. There’s also a storyline going on where you’re in a spaceship traveling back in time searching for the ultimate playlist. This felt mostly like filler but did not detract from the music and dancing in any way.

Initially, the Jabbawockeez are dancing to modern hip-hop and electronic types of music. As the show progresses, however, the intent behind the name “Timeless” becomes clear. They do a nice job of taking the audience through various generations of popular music, modifying their dance routines along the way. As someone who grew up in Seattle in the 90s, I particularly enjoyed their tribute to grunge music. There was disco, soul, and they even set music from the 1930s to a modern beat and danced to it!

Volume during Jabbawockeez performance

It’s worth noting that this is a loud show. You’re in a small theater and they crank it way up. There’s a lot of bass too, so if you’re sensitive to volume or low frequencies this wouldn’t be the best show for you.

Photography and filming during the Jabbawockeez show

This could change at any time, but when we saw Jabbawockeez an announcement was made before the show regarding their filming, photography, and social media policies. They asked the audience not to film the entire show, but encouraged us to take videos and photos, then share heavily on social media with #Jabbawockeez and #Timeless. Clearly, they want as much free advertising as possible via the socials, and are willing to allow filming/photography in the process.

Family impressions of the Jabbawockeez Las Vegas show

There’s no doubt our kids loved the show. They were familiar with this type of dancing but hadn’t seen much of it in person. Everyone got caught up in the energy of the performance and left the theater very happy. The “laser dancing,” for lack of a better term, was a particular favorite part of the show for our family. They did an incredible job of fusing dance moves with lasers on stage. We had never seen anything like it.

Jabbawockeez Pro Tips

One piece of advice I would give to families considering this show would be to try to get booth seating in the back. It’s a small theater, so sitting in the back is no big deal. You’re still only about 50 feet from the stage. The benefit of the booth is that your kids will have more room to move around and dance during the show. It also may be cheaper since it’s in the back.

Another pro tip is related to buying tickets. You’ll have to go at the right times, but downstairs at MGM Grand is a ticket booth. We walked by on a Saturday evening and were offered 80% off for that night’s remaining seats. I wouldn’t recommend this approach if you were dead set on seeing a specific show, but if you’re flexible you could land a great deal.

Jabbawockeez Las Vegas show summary

If you’re looking for a family-friendly Las Vegas show that the kids will enjoy, Jabbawockeez has to be on your list. It may not be for everyone depending on your entertainment preferences, but if you love music and dance it’s a no-brainer. If I’m out on a date night with my wife this probably wouldn’t be the show I would pick, but for a fun family night out on the strip, this show is tough to beat. The Blue Man Group would be another obvious choice in this space but Jabbawockeez is fun and unique. Audio and light sensitivity would be the only concern worth mentioning.

It’s been a few weeks since seeing the show and our kids still talk about how much they enjoyed it. I have overheard them telling friends about the show, which made me feel better about paying full price for our whole family online. It was worth it though, especially considering it was our first Las Vegas show as a family. Many more to come of course!
